Granite Headstone Export Packing and Delivery Inspection Guide
Granite memorials are heavy, often contain several components, and combine polished surfaces with vulnerable carved edges. Export packing must respond to the shape, center of gravity, contact surfaces, and handling method of each part. A good system also creates a clear record for inspection when the shipment arrives.
Create a component list before packing
A complete memorial may include a headstone, bases, cover slabs, posts, vases, sculpture, and fittings. Confirm the quantity of every part and number components that have a similar appearance or a specific orientation. The numbers should correspond with the packing list or assembly drawing so the recipient can identify missing, mixed, or reversed pieces.
Protect polished surfaces, carving, and edges
Polished stone faces should not rub directly against each other. Figures, flowers, corners, and thin carved edges should not carry concentrated loads. Use separating and cushioning materials that will not stain the stone, with additional protection at likely pressure points. Protective material must be secured so it cannot move away during transport.
Brace the crate around the center of gravity
Heavy stone requires a stable export crate with bottom support, stops, and internal bracing to limit movement in every direction. Tall, thin components such as upright headstones need particular protection from tipping. The crate, pallet, and forklift entry points must match the planned loading and unloading method.
Split loads according to handling conditions
Putting every component into one crate is not always safer. Individual weight, available lifting equipment, access at the destination, and installation order all affect the packing plan. An excessively heavy crate may exceed the practical capacity of forklifts or cranes at a warehouse or cemetery. Too many small crates, however, increase counting and small-part handling risks.
Label transport and installation information clearly
Outer markings can identify the crate number, project number, weight, center of gravity, lifting direction, and tip-over warning. Component labels should remain readable without placing permanent or staining marks on visible stone surfaces. Keep electronic copies of the packing list, packing photographs, and assembly order separately.
Plan container loading and transport restraint
Weight should be distributed during loading, and crates must be restrained for the selected transport method so they do not move during braking, turns, or vessel motion. Give the carrier accurate product weights, crate dimensions, and handling requirements. Qualified logistics personnel should determine the final lashing, lifting, and container safety method.
Document the shipment before opening
On arrival, inspect the crate for leaning, cracks, moisture, impact, or broken seals. Photograph every side, the crate number, and the transport labels. If damage is visible, notify the carrier and follow the transport document procedure before moving or opening the crate.
Suggested unpacking inspection order
- Match crate numbers, component labels, and quantities;
- Check headstones, bases, and sculpture for cracks or chipped edges;
- Inspect polished faces, inscriptions, and colored details;
- Photograph the affected area, its packing position, and the wider scene;
- Keep all components stable until installation conditions are confirmed.
Packing, logistics, and receiving inspection form one quality chain. Clear identification, suitable bracing, and complete arrival records protect the memorial and give the installer and buyer better information if an issue needs to be resolved.
